Adult ADHD at Work: More Common Than You Think
Physician sign-off required before publishing.
When most people picture ADHD, they picture a restless child. But ADHD doesn't disappear at adulthood - a substantial share of adults carry it, many undiagnosed, and its effects land squarely in the workplace. For employers, understanding adult ADHD isn't niche; it's recognizing a common, treatable driver of the performance struggles you're already seeing.
What adult ADHD looks like at work
Not hyperactivity, usually. More often: difficulty sustaining attention on tedious tasks, trouble with organization and time estimation, procrastination on things that require initiation, forgetfulness, and difficulty regulating focus (including "hyperfocus" on the wrong thing). Many adults with ADHD are bright and capable - and exhausted from compensating.
Why it stays hidden
Adults with ADHD often develop elaborate workarounds and blame themselves for "not trying hard enough." They're frequently high performers who work twice as hard for the same output, until a role change or rising complexity outstrips their coping strategies.
Why it's a medical, treatable issue - not a character flaw
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition, and it responds well to treatment - a combination of medication and strategies, guided by a physician. This is important for employers to understand: what can look like a discipline or attitude problem may be an untreated, highly treatable medical condition. Getting the person a proper assessment can transform their performance.
