How to Talk to Clients About Mental Health ROI
Clients increasingly want to know that mental health spend pays back, and "it's the right thing to do" - while true - doesn't close a budget conversation with a CFO. Advisors who can frame mental health in ROI terms win the argument and the trust. Here's how to have that conversation credibly.
Lead with the cost of inaction
The most persuasive number isn't the program cost - it's what untreated mental illness already costs the client in disability, presenteeism, and turnover. Start there, using their own data where possible. The spend is small next to the liability it addresses.
Use the benchmark honestly
The Deloitte $1.62-per-dollar figure is a strong anchor - but it's a median with a wide spread, and higher-return programs are the ones that actually treat people and reduce disability. Present it as directional evidence that the category pays back, not as a guaranteed number. Overpromising ROI destroys credibility at the first renewal.
Tie the return to a mechanism
Don't wave at ROI abstractly. Connect it to how: faster treatment shortens disability claims, reduces recurrence, cuts presenteeism, and retains people. When a client can see the mechanism, the ROI becomes believable rather than a marketing claim.
Commit to measurement
The advisor who says "and here's how we'll measure whether it's working" is the one clients keep. Recommend vendors that report outcomes so the ROI story can be proven, not just asserted.
CorpCARE gives advisors an ROI story with a real mechanism and real measurement. Let's build the case for your client together.
