Mental Health Benefits vs. Mental Health Care: A Buyer's Checklist
Every workplace mental health vendor will tell you they deliver care. Most deliver benefits - access, support, resources - which is not the same thing. Use this checklist to tell them apart before you sign.
1. Can they diagnose?
Ask directly: does your service include diagnosis by a physician? If the answer is "our counsellors assess," that's support, not medical care.
2. Can they prescribe?
Medication is central to treating many conditions. If no one on the team can prescribe or manage medication, the program cannot treat those conditions - full stop.
3. How fast is real access?
Not "how fast to a counsellor" - how fast to a physician or psychiatrist when one is needed. If the honest answer is "we refer to the public system," you're buying triage, not treatment.
4. Who owns the case?
When an employee needs more than one type of help, does someone coordinate the journey, or does the employee self-navigate? Coordination is what prevents the handoff cliff.
5. What happens at the edge of scope?
Every service has a boundary. Ask what happens when they hit it. "We refer out" means the program ends exactly where the sickest employees need it most.
6. What outcomes do they measure?
Sessions delivered is a utilization metric, not an outcome. Ask whether they measure clinical improvement, return-to-work, and disability duration.
The bottom line
A benefit gives people something to use. Care makes people better. A complete program needs both - but only one of them treats illness. If your vendor can't clear the diagnose-and-prescribe bar, you have benefits, and the care layer is still open.
