OCD Is More Than a Personality Quirk: What Employers Should Know
Physician sign-off required before publishing.
"I'm so OCD about my desk" has turned a serious medical condition into a casual figure of speech. Real obsessive-compulsive disorder is nothing like tidiness or perfectionism - it's a distressing, sometimes disabling condition, and it's far more common than most workplaces realize.
What OCD actually involves
OCD consists of obsessions - intrusive, unwanted, distressing thoughts - and compulsions, repetitive behaviours or mental acts a person feels driven to perform to relieve the anxiety those thoughts create. It can consume hours a day and cause real suffering. It is not about liking things neat, and it's rarely visible to colleagues.
Why the "quirk" framing is harmful
Trivializing OCD makes it harder for people who genuinely have it to be taken seriously or to seek help. Someone silently spending hours on compulsions or tormented by intrusive thoughts hears "everyone's a little OCD" and learns their real struggle isn't worth naming.
What employers should know
OCD is highly treatable with proper care - specific evidence-based therapy and, often, medication. Most people with OCD work and succeed; what they need is access to real clinical treatment and a workplace that doesn't reduce their condition to a punchline. Recognizing it as a medical condition is the starting point.
